Life’s simplicity

There is an invented name for doing less or simplifying life –  downshifting. Interesting detail is that we tend to define and name everything.

Downshifting is considered a trend where upper middle class people can decide to do less and enjoy more leisure. For some, downshifting is a tick in the box, a stage of life or a trend that needs to be experienced, after which one can go back to the hustling and striving.  If life is lived according to trends or paradigms that has been set by others, you have missed something on a deeper level. Downshifting can be painful because it means deep mental work with yourself, giving up useless roles, labels or things you have believed in, identities or useless material. It is many times easier to stay in your comfort zone.

@katrisyvarinen has put into words what less of everything means: “In a world where everyone constantly wants more and where all empty time and space is filled with noise or stuff, a radical act is to be completely quiet, settle for a little less and notice that you already have everything inside you .”

Doing a lot, constantly carrying out and absorbing matter takes us further away from ourselves and from hearing our own thoughts better.  We aim for everything more because we seek constant pleasure and we think meaning can be found outside of ourselves.  We cling so strongly to the old, to control and security structures, because change scares us.  Simplifying life brings more space, peace and thus the opportunity to find our true self.

Many may think that doing less or simplifying life is not possible for everyone. Simplifying doesn’t mean lying in a hammock in the Maldives. It can mean retraining, changing career paths, giving up material, reducing useless things, limiting work or some pleasures, or examining one’s own goals, values or needs. Think about whether the things I am pursuing are necessary and in which direction they will drive me. What is necessary, how do I want to spend my time and what I need for a good life. Often they are simple things.
